The
AJC should be commended for publishing charts and data on the topic of the
Voting Rights Act. Unfortunately the conclusion captured in the
headline does not correlate with the information, and does not meet a
true scientific test from the data shown. It's clear from the second chart that
over the last 30 years Republicans have indeed become more conservative, ( 300%
based on the trend line ), whilst the Democrats have taken a slightly
more liberal view, ( 30%). It is not clear from the article how that is related
to the Voting Rights Act and seems to indicate an emotional bias on the part of
the authors.
In a
sea of political gamesmanship and increasing ideological positions, to single
out the VRA as the culprit is unreasonable. The intent of the act is to keep us
honest and this article unfortunately furthers the biased rhetoric of the
conservative wing which would prefer to keep the playing field at a steep
angle favoring the right. If the supreme court refutes the VRA it will be a sad
day for our nation and a horrendous step back to the mean and nasty politics of
the Jim Crow era and we all will lose.
