Following the
racially motivated murders in Charleston S.C. it is encouraging to see a number
of southern states removing the confederate flag from license plates and
government facilities.
Not so in
Georgia. Our governor has instead taken this as an opportunity to brag to
business CEO's that we don't have a flag issue here. He also has suggested a
compromise for Georgia license plates that would allow the flag to
remain. By doing so the state of Georgia is basically condoning the display of
a symbol of white supremacy.
As a mark of
basic decency, all these symbols should be completely removed from anything
that the state owns or offers to its citizens. Furthermore the governor
should offer an immediate free exchange of all current license plates that
display that flag, for a new one that has no image of that symbol
whatsoever.
