The horrible events at Brussels airport show the weakness of
security systems in airports around the world. No amount of gun toting good guys,
both police and civilian, patrolling the concourses would have prevented this
tragedy. The solution has to be found elsewhere.
The non-secure entrances to our airports are hubs of teeming
people waiting in lines to check in, go through security, or await arriving
passengers. It's a disaster waiting to happen. All areas of the airport inside
the building and on the tarmac need to be secure and our current approach is
dismally inadequate.
There need to be multiple levels of security checks,
including all access points into the airport. No one should be allowed through
the entrance doors without being properly checked. Yes that would be terribly
inconvenient to travelers but it would surely help reduce the ease of access
for those wanting to do harm inside.
Car parking, arrivals, and pick up need to be properly
separated from the main buildings. Today at most airports travelers can simply
drive up to the curb, a mere 10 feet from the entrance where people congregate
and crowds await to check bags outside. It's too much of an opportunity for the
evil few who want to carry out dastardly acts of terror. Surely we can
work out a better system to reduce the risk
