Climate change
December 19th 2015
The article on the predicament of the Little
Cumberland Island lighthouse should be a warning bell to the Georgia
Legislature and the Republican Party in particular that it's time to get beyond
denial and admit that global warming is on our doorstep. It takes courage to admit
that something you have opposed for years is actually happening. I hope that
those amongst us who have disputed the change in climate will now start to
think about what we can do to protect our shores and our state against this
inevitable effect. The evidence is mounting and it's time to put aside
the stubborn opposition and come up with solutions and plans to protect our
future. All the effort we are putting into the Savannah River port will come to
naught if the seas rise beyond our ability to cope. Our coastal towns and communities
will be washed away. A way of life will disappear forever, and our economy will
be heavily impacted. Surely we are smart enough to recognize the symptoms and
make the effort to protect our world. If not, maybe we deserve the
consequences, though, as usual, it will be our children and those less well-off
who will suffer the most.
