The Friday cartoons by Luckovitch and Ramirez in the AJC
were a counterbalance that embodied the differences in mindset between
progressives and conservatives.
Luckovitch clearly showed the disdain of the GOP for the
long term climate change threat that could impact our very civilization whilst
focusing all their attention on the immediate threat of ISIS. Ramirez illustrated the reverse and used it
as an opportunity to demean President Obama.
Something he seems to delight in doing.
Personally I think we need to address both issues. ISIS is a
near term urgent threat that requires the attention of the world's military. It
will be defeated if we have a concerted effort by all countries who are
sickened by the barbarous acts of the uncivilized ISIS mob. The solution is clearly within the grasp and
military capabilities of the Western allies, Russia, and the moderate Middle
Eastern states if we only we could stop squabbling over the means to achieve
it.
The task to defeat Climate Change is much more complex and
maybe that is why the GOP shies away from it and dismisses it as if it were a
boogie man in the closet. The problem is
real, and has far reaching implications for our human race; maybe even our
extinction if left unchecked.
We don’t have a lot more time to fool around making light of
this problem. We all need to start taking it seriously by electing
representatives who have a long term perspective. Representatives who listen to
experts, respect knowledge produced in the scientific process, and take action for
the sake of the people, not just bloated business whose only interest is the
short term bottom line.
