Americans love to claim that our country is exceptional.
What made it exceptional was the unique balance we struck between capitalism
and democracy that allowed for the unprecedented growth of our middle class.
The resulting wealth sharing propelled our standard of living, our literacy,
our knowledge, our creativity and entrepreneurism that made us the role model
for the rest of the world. It generated the compassion and empathy that made us
stand out as a beacon of hope for humanity and a model for all to follow. But
with the rise of neo-conservatism resulting in Trump we have shifted the
balance so far to the right that our fragile democracy is now in peril. Trump's
belligerent dictates are the start of a long slide towards demagoguery and
oppression. A careful and orchestrated response by our judiciary and
legislative body is the only means to restore balance. Our elected
representatives need to find some backbone and rise up to oppose these ill
thought out directives that jeopardize our future, and we the people need
to hold those representatives responsible.
