The Sunday edition of the AJC
contains stories and columns reinforcing my concern that America stands
perilously close to the brink. Jay Bookman lays out the case for taking the
Russian interference in our electoral process extremely seriously, yet Trump
thumbs his nose at it. The KKK are reported to be annoyed at being called white
supremacists as they gain stature as a result of the horrible election we just
went through. Leonard Pitts writes his most poignant and damning column ever on
the lack of justice for blacks in our country whilst still holding out hope
that America really could be a place of principles, equality, and tolerance.
The failing infrastructure of our country is exemplified in the story on
lock no 52 on the Ohio River which, if it failed, would impact huge swathes of
our economy and result in massive inflation. And the front pages lay out the
horror of doctors gone rogue, and show the depth to which our society has
fallen.
In less than a month we will
replace a most considerate and gentlemanly president, with a man who seems to
have no principles and glorifies only wealth and power. We will move from a
scandal free, rational and serious administration to one that smacks of
nepotism, egoism, irrational behavior, and self-centered glorification. We have
come too far to let this grand experiment fail, and only through the reasonable
efforts of serious professional journalists, like those at the AJC, will Trump
be held accountable.
