Donald Trump is correct. The election process is rigged. But
not the way he thinks it is. In fact his statements in themselves are an
attempt to rig the voting in his favor by intimidating voters and
preventing some from exercising their constitutional right to vote. He has
stirred up fears of virtually nonexistent issues, and encouraged the less civil
in our midst to make things difficult for the timid, the marginalized, the poor
and the elderly to vote. It has been proven time and again that there is
no basis to his claim of voter fraud, yet he and his cronies continue this
charade to stir up the mass of people whose biases make them easy pickings for
such conspiracy theorists.
There are however real issues with our current election
process. The highly conservative Supreme Court has gutted the voting rights
act, opening the gates for republican controlled states to gleefully enact
tougher voting ID laws targeting minorities who generally support democrats. We
live in such a state. Additionally the system to create voting districts along
partisan lines by whoever is in power has disenfranchised many of us. In
Georgia, nearly half the population supports a liberal agenda, yet only 4 out
of 14 congressional representatives are democrat, and both senators are
republican. The vast majority of state legislators and executives are
republican. They don't represent my point of view at all, so the only voice I
have is my vote, which is unfortunately drowned out by the rigged system of
Georgia gerrymandering. That isn't what our founders envisaged in our
representative republic, but I will continue to vote and I encourage all
citizens to vote thoughtfully so that we might change this rigged system to
benefit us all.
