Snowjam 2014 is finally over and the
recriminations and witch hunts have already begun. In the midst of the
finger pointing the root causes will once again sneak below the radar and,
unless some brain power is truly applied to this systemic problem, nothing
constructive will be done.
Let's
face it, Atlanta, as a metro region, is broken. Our road system is not capable
of withstanding the worst-case traffic scenario that we faced this week. Our
mass transportation , which could have saved us from this embarrassment, is
virtually non existent. Our local government is fractured and broken into self
centered cities and counties which don't cooperate on purpose. Our school
systems act autonomously without the benefit of central governance. Our state
and local governments vie for control and obstruct real progress. Our citizens
greedily expect the benefits of this large metropolis without providing adequate
funds.
Are we
really surprised that a few flakes of snow could bring our city to a
standstill? It makes me shudder to think what we would do in a real national
emergency . We metro Atlantans need to grow up and start acting for the good of
us all, and that means cooperative thinking and putting aside the century of
differences that have designed the muddle we live in.
