Jay Bookman, in his column on tax shift, once again points
out the duplicity of the republican controlled Georgia legislature. Our
governor and his allies in the Georgia house and senate have stubbornly refused
to expand Medicaid using the funds offered by the Affordable care act; a move
which is desperately needed by hundreds of thousands of Georgians and
especially by medical facilities in our rural communities. Yet the republicans
are now planning to build a tax reduction into law that cannot be reversed even
if we suffer an economic downtown. Such a move will benefit the rich in our
midst at the expense of the less well-off and will continue the denial of much
needed medical services. This bait and switch approach will be on the
ballot in the November general election, and will most likely be phrased as a
good thing for our state. I hope that Georgia is not fooled again into voting
against our own interests. I appreciate the AJC providing clarity on such an
important issue as this, and urge other media outlets to join force in opposing
the introduction of this poison pill into our state tax code.
