Senior voting history in Georgia

October 12 2014

As a senior citizen I was intrigued by the statistics quoted by Jay Bookman in his Sunday column. It seems that the vast majority of ethnically white seniors tend to vote republican regardless of the history of that party. It amazes me that people will consistently vote against their own interests.

The republicans have actively attempted to block and hinder social programs for the elderly such as  Social  Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. They continually mis-inform the public and especially the senior community as to their real intentions. Their trickle down policies have been totally discredited as purely supporting  the rich, and their proposed austerity measures are aimed at hurting the old and the poor.

Jay Bookman has it right when he references the actuarial impacts on future voting practices, but maybe that could be brought forward with some clear messages to seniors. Look closely at the platforms and history of each party before voting. The democrats are truly  concerned for seniors, whilst the republican are simply foxes in disguise, ready to gut the programs that keep many of us seniors alive  and well.
